A Chief and Council initiative.
Since 1989 the community of the Simpcw First Nation get together once a year, fall/winter, to do planning for the upcoming year. Part of the planning is to prioritize the community needs and develop an action plan and select individuals to carry out the plans. Each passing year the community priorities change. The planning sessions are scheduled away from home, in order for people to focus.
At each planning session three priorities are outlined for the community to follow through within an allotted time frame.
On October 15 & 16, 2005 the focuses the up coming year are:Aboriginal Rights; Community Building; Language & Culture and Economic Development. The plans included: Simpcw website updated; powepoint presentation on Simpcw; plans for winter home sites in the Gosnell area; finish the hunting cabins in Powder Lake area; look at future cabins in the Tete Jeune area; put government/corporations on notice; Simpcw flags; adoption of Consultation and Accommodation guidelines by community; pass heritage bylaw; continue to build strong evidence base of Simpcw history and store in secure archival storage system; good communcation with our neighboring Shuswap bands; have community building started by September 2007; ongoing support for language, sweats, stick games, dance for Headstart Program and Neqweyqwelsten School and community; hire a sustainable management coordinator and registered professional forester; have a long term forest license.
