Fire Department History (1985 to the Present)
The department started out with 8 active members of all age groups. Presently the core group consists of six members. Fire Chief plus five other band members. The current fire hall was open in the fall of 1988. The current members have taken basic fire training from First Nations Emergency Social Services and Justice Institute of B.C. (JIBC).
First Responders: A few of the current members and additional members have been added to the department as First Responders. A First Responder is an individual who volunteers his or her time as a qualified first aider, trained by JIBC, who responds out ahead of the B.C. Ambulance Service. Chu Chua is at least 20+ minutes from the nearest clinic and up one hour or more from a hospital. First Responders are called out before an ambulance in life threatening emergencies to provide first aid until the ambulance arrives. The fire depart also has one qualified Emergency Medical Responder volunteer.

The fire department has played an active role in the “Learn Not To Burn” campaign in our school. The department has put on different sessions involving Neqweyqwelsten School ie. Teaching how to use a fire extinguisher.
The Chu Chua Volunteer Fire Department host annually a slo-pitch tournament as their main fund raiser. The year 2009 marked its 23rd annual tournament. The tournament is held the second or third weekend of July.
During the 2003 fire, the Fire Department helped the Barriere Fire Department. We provided the service of both of our trucks during the Fire.
The Fire Deparmnet has an aggreement with Barriere Fire Department, so either one can help each other out during an emergency. There is also an agreement in place for the Barriere Fire Department to protect the Louis Creek Reserve.
