Simpcwetkwe Youth Group

The Simpcwetkwe Youth Group has been operating in Chu Chua for several decades, and continues to be very successful in its ability to engage Simpcw’s younger generation. The group aims to provide a good start to Youth by teaching traditional ways while fostering education and events that aid them in prospering in today’s world. Currently, roughly 85% of Simpcw’s 9-18 year old members are involved with the program.

Under the supervision of a Simpcw Youth Worker, the group plans trips, activities and cultural opportunities. They also set long-term goals for personal and community development and fundraising initiatives. The Youth participate in community events and meet monthly with the Simpcw Elders to provide updates on their activities and receive feedback and guidance from the Elders.

The Simpcwetkwe Youth Group has been involved in many activities over the years, including:

  • Field trips
  • Movie Nights
  • Participation in the North American Indigenous Games and the BC First Nation Junior Basketball Provincials
  • Fundraising for trips or equipment
  • Afterschool homework program
  • Active participation in cultural and language activities
  • Participation in Youth Summer Employment Program
  • Attendance at the annual “Gathering of Voices” Aboriginal Youth Conference

Simpcw Tseptekwll and Research Society (S.T.A.R.S.)

Simpcw Tseptekwll and Research Society (S.T.A.R.S.) is a Charitable Organization located within the Simpcw community. Currently, it is inactive, but has done a great deal in the past to preserve the traditional language, culture and history of First Nations in British Columbia. The focus is on elders- the source of much of our traditional knowledge- and youth- those who will continue our efforts in the future, and share with generations to come.

  • The Society has several key goals, all aimed at the preservation of First Nations culture and history. With that in mind, the group aims to:
  • Develop effective strategies for teaching First Nations languages
  • Document and preserve the Simpcw language
  • Develop and implement an archive system for cultural documents and resources
  • Encourage First Nations Community members to carry on cultural traditions and practices
  • Ensure the continuance of First Nations culture and language by working with other First Nations groups
  • Develop research models for First Nations language, culture and history
  • Develop curriculum for youth in language and cultural studies
